The inspiration for my project comes from one of
traditional Chinese death culture, the practice of
"Ganshi"(Corpse Transportation)in Xiangxi. People often
feel uneasy about this tradition, but in reality, “Ganshi”
is a method to allow those who passed away far from
their hometown to return home and reunite with their
families. Intrigued by the underlying story and traditional
Chinese perspectives on death and returning home, I
decided to create a picture book centered around the
theme of “Ganshi”. Throughout the process, I used a
combination of charcoal and collage, digitally compiling
them to create the final illustrations.
Second child syndrome is always the topic Iwant to discuss
with With my personal experience of being first born
chid,l did struggle about being left alone after second born
child is born.Iwant to focus on the psychology and
emotions of the first born child is isolated. With more
research on child psychology and children pictures book
about new born children,I found out that the solution to
the second child syndrome is that parents should gve the same attention to both of the chidren and siblings should have love each other. With this idea,I create a graphic novel using mixed media including watercolour and coloured pencil.
Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated, ungoverned settlement in Hong Kong, known for itsovercrowded slums that hold fond memories for generations ofHong Kong people. it emerged in the lateI 9th century, growing into a maze-like enclave of cramped apartments, businesses, and ilegal activities. Thecity was demolished in 1 994, leaving a legacy of urban chaos and a sense of community and social solidarity.
I am going to document life in Kowloon Walled City in a multi-layered pop-up model. l carried outexperimental drawings and develop a multi-media printing production, including, collagraph, drypoint etching, monoprint and jelly print. Kowloon Walled City is a collective memory of Hong Kongpeople.
To many, the city was simply home. "Life was poor, but we are very happy." said a former resident. Eventhough it has been demolished, the spirits of the Walled City still live on in the hearts of manyHongkongers. The reason l am choosing this theme is that l want to bring back how life used to be simpleand happy when people were close and loyal to each other in Kowloon Walled City. For the first layer, ldrew modern architecture in digital to create the impression of Hong Kong nowadays. For the secondloyers l made a shorter building with cramped apartments using my printings showing the Kowloon walledcity in 1940's.
For this project,1create a series of postcards,6 drawings in total.
want to use the frst person perspectve to taik about the relationship
between me and my fother with using penc to create reaistc drawings and spot ofblue colour in riso printing,Iwant to bring out the topic of common "missing father fgure"in east Asia cutures. The drawing is a journey starting fom howI was sad and confused about
his absence in my chidhood, to the fina understarding about his ways showing his love and caring in silence.
I was aways amused by the green space in Cambridge. staying on grass and doing observational drawings is always the best way for me to inspire myself With capturing the movement around the envronment,1ike observing the colours and put it down in my sketching in my style.
