Under the high-pressure educational methods, I have seen several cases of students self-harming or attempting suicide around me which made me start to reflect on the education system I live in. Inspired by a news report about primary school students "Bathroom Social," I thought that the functionality of our classrooms, playgrounds, bedrooms, and other spaces has been distorted and alienated by this high-pressure education. To call on parents and schools to respect students' independent personalities that need to breathe freely.
I recalled my first experience of lying: being isolated by my friends for not having a pet and eventually lying about having a beautiful jellyfish. Contrasting the adults' perspective with the child's, I designed two storylines and created a specially bound book. When the audience reads the first storyline from an adult perspective, they will find that my description of the pet jellyfish and the real jellyfish illustration do not match, thus realizing that I was lying. Then they will find the fragments of the second storyline (child's perspective) in the book's compartment and put together the second story to understand the real reason behind my lie. At the same time, they will feel the contradiction and struggle that I have felt for many years when I was caught up in the lie.
In this project, I discuss my own boundaries, which brings my attention to my own boundary disorder. After further expanding my research on the population and timeframe, I realize that this is an issue of a dysfunctional sense of boundaries caused by the modern online context. Therefore, I present the work in two parts: a painting installation that allows the viewer to understand the complexity of my personal boundaries, and a book that allows the viewer to think about the new-age boundary issues that we are facing at the moment.
Pimple has always been a concern for me, and I have tried to treat it in various ways, but they still appear and become my annoyance. I gradually realized that this is because what we are actually pursuing on social media is exceptionally smooth and ceramic-like skin, which is actually abnormal. Pimple is like mould: ugly but it is a natural physiological phenomenon that symbolizes my growth. So I use beads and other materials to try to tell teenagers like me that pimple is a natural physiological phenomena, hoping that they can accept themselves and rediscover their own beauty.
