In this imaginary architecture, the author tries to unveil the phenomenon and debate on utility, and bring ourselves to a new perspective. The site is on Fuxing island, Shanghai, an artificial island that is separated from Puxi by a canal, and a former industrial island that is now barren. The author indicated the features of post-modernism, and used Wool Algorithm as an indication of a potential future of architecture: use technology, including the progressing Generative AI, to bring post-modernity back to rational. Instead of post-modernism's anti-meta-narration, the author hopes to find peace, prosperity, justice and equality in more dedicatedly conceived utility.
In modern urban design, more considerations are given to the formation of communities and the feelings of those who take walking and public transportations as their major ways to move around.
This design is an TOD urban design project located in Songjiang Town, suburb Shanghai. Two important metro lines, one existing and the other planned, will meet here, while on the ground a new community will grow out of this small residential area without livelihood. With the help of public transportation as well as the numerous population it brings to the site, not only can we bring convenience to the residents and employees working and living nearby, but we can also obtain the ability to concentrate everyone into a florish public area, where they can have a clear recognition about their location and its special features, whether those people are staying, hanging around or passing by, whether remaining in densely built areas or heading towards farmlands.
With this proposal, a "Transfer axis" is put into the site. It carries the function of providing not only a transfer tunnel for metro passengers, but also public service, leisures, and a means to get across the 8-lane-wide motorway separating the site. Surrounding the axis, other buildings for commercial, office and living are placed according to their accessibilities to the former, and so did several green areas, connecting this new community to existing farmlands. Finally, bus stops, private car parking lots and auxiliary walking systems are placed in the site as supplements for public transportations.
With the development of the Internet, a rapid change of lifestyle can be seen in daily life. Some of the spaces in traditional residential buildings find it difficult adapting to newly developed activities related to the Internet, calling for innovations in this field.
This design is aimed to develop a new kind of community that is suitable for new activities in the Internet Era. Daily activities, both online and offline ones, are categorized by whether they are public or private. Given that social spaces nowadays do not fit social activities perfectly, social spaces in private dwellings are largely reduced and replaced by newly designed public spaces. Finally, with public spaces placed in several flores, other valid spaces are distributed to different dwellings for different groups of people. A Python program is also used during this process in order to make sure that everyone can find their favorite public space, and therefore enjoy the public services and social activities.
