From the invention of the light bulb to the advent of VR, technology has continually expanded the horizons of human vision. My project aims to extend this exploration beyond visible light, venturing into the realm of "light" as a broader concept, while using auditory perception to reveal the invisible ultraviolet spectrum. Through literature review and bio-design, I discovered that the brain's sensory plasticity enables it to adapt by repurposing signals from other senses in response to loss. Additionally, experiments on plant responses to ultraviolet light, measured through sensors, confirm that plants absorb or reflect UV light in distinct ways. Inspired by these findings, I designed an art installation combining plants with three sound-emitting devices that generate both harmonious and disharmonious sounds, symbolizing the biological effects of ultraviolet light on plant life.
When we encounter a new language or accent, we often unconsciously form judgments about the speaker, sometimes leading to accent-based discrimination. My project seeks to deconstruct the spatial and temporal limits of sound, examining how these factors influence perceptions of accent. Through literature, I found that language and music share cognitive similarities, and both can be analyzed in terms of rhythm, pitch, and intensity. Building on the idea that "sound's fluidity allows individuals to adapt across social roles and environments," I explored how sound and space reflect this fluidity in languages of diverse cultures. The project involved speakers from six different countries, with ultrasonic sensors measuring the audience's distance to them. A Bluetooth volume controller created an interactive experience, based on real-time auditory and spatial interaction.
Interval is an interactive application designed to offer travelers a unique approach to sound exploration, presenting an artistic alternative to the visual-centric narratives that dominate the modern travel industry. By challenging the prevalence of misinformation in online travel stories, the project seeks to inspire users to rediscover destinations through auditory experiences, fostering deeper connections and a fresh perspective on their journey.
